Salon COSHH self-check: products and skin

Check the work people actually do with products, water and dust, then check that exposure controls are used and working. A folder of safety data sheets alone is not a COSHH assessment.

This self-check covers small hair and beauty salon owners and employers in England only. It is not a complete salon assessment.

Choose Yes / No / Not sure for each question. Answer Yes only when you have checked what happens today. For a treatment you do not offer, choose Yes only after confirming that the question does not apply, and note why. Treat Not sure as a gap to investigate using the same next step as No. For each No or Not sure, note the action, responsible person and follow-up date. This is a suggested working format, not a pass mark.

COSHH means Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. Employers must assess hazardous-substance risks and prevent exposure or, where that is not reasonably practicable, adequately control it. The practical methods in HSE's salon sheets are guidance; equally effective measures may be used. These questions and answer rules are editorial prompts, not legal tests. Official guidance
